Spring wildflowers and bluebells in a Scottish Highland forest

Spring in the Highlands

Bluebell woods. Returning puffins. Lambs in every field. The Highlands in April, May, and June are a masterclass in renewal. Here's what to look for — and when.

Spring arrives late in the Highlands. While London is in full bloom in March, the Cairngorms might still have snow on the plateau until May. But when it comes, it comes fast — a sudden explosion of green, purple, and birdsong that makes the long winter worth it.

Bluebell Woods (Late April – May)

The floor of Scotland's ancient woodlands turns purple. The best displays are in Perthshire (the Birks of Aberfeldy, Dunkeld) and around Loch Lomond. Bluebells flower for about 3-4 weeks. The peak varies by year but is usually the first two weeks of May.

💡 The Birks of Aberfeldy has a circular walk through the best bluebell wood in Perthshire. Free.

Seabird Colonies Return (April – July)

Puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and gannets return to Scotland's cliffs and islands. Staffa (off Mull), Handa Island (Sutherland), and the Isle of May (Fife) are the best spots. Puffins are on land April-August — May and June are peak viewing months.

💡 Book boat trips to Staffa from Mull in advance. Puffins are most active in the morning.

Lambing Season (March – April)

Fields across the Highlands fill with newborn lambs. The sight of a black-faced ewe with twin lambs against a Highland backdrop is spring defined. Keep dogs on leads near livestock. The lambing sheds at some farms welcome visitors — ask locally.

💡 The fields around Glencoe and the A9 through Perthshire are reliable lamb-spotting territory.

Ospreys Return (April)

Ospreys migrate back from West Africa to the same nests they've used for years. Loch Garten (Cairngorms) and Loch of the Lowes (Perthshire) have viewing hides with CCTV on the nests. Watching an osprey dive for a fish at 80mph is a top-5 Scottish wildlife moment.

💡 Loch Garten RSPB reserve near Aviemore. £5 entry. The osprey nest camera streams online.

Cherry Blossom (April)

Edinburgh's Meadows and Princes Street Gardens bloom with cherry blossom. In the Highlands, the wild gean (wild cherry) blooms in scattered woodland clearings — less dramatic than Japan, but more surprising when you come across them.

💡 The Meadows in Edinburgh is the classic spot. First two weeks of April usually peak.

Longer Days (May – June)

By late May, daylight stretches from 4:30am to 10pm in the Highlands. The extra light triggers a burst of growth — bracken unfurling, birches leafing, the landscape going from brown to green in what feels like a week. It's the best time of year for long walks and road trips.

💡 Sunset is after 10pm in late June in the far north. You can hike until 9pm and still walk out in daylight.

Editor's Note

I saw my first puffin on Staffa in May 2019. It waddled up to within a metre of where I was sitting, looked at me with its painted-toy face, and appeared to find me deeply uninteresting. Then it flew off a cliff and caught a sand eel. I've been going back every spring since.
