A pristine white sand beach in the Scottish Highlands

Highland Beaches

White sand. Turquoise water. Not a soul in sight. The Scottish Highlands have beaches that could pass for the Caribbean — if the Caribbean were 12°C and required a 4-mile walk to reach.

People don't associate Scotland with beaches. This is a mistake. The west coast and islands have sand that rivals the Caribbean — white, fine, and backed by mountains instead of palm trees. The water is cold. The weather is unpredictable. But on a sunny day in May with the beach to yourself, you won't care about either.

Sandwood Bay — Sutherland

Pink-gold sand, a sea stack, and a 4-mile walk each way to reach it. Britain's most beautiful beach, and the walk keeps it that way.

💡 No facilities. The bothy near the beach is basic shelter.

Achmelvich — NC500, near Lochinver

White sand and turquoise water on the north-west coast. Campsite behind the dunes. Combine with a pie from the Lochinver Larder.

💡 Campsite fills in summer. Book ahead.

Camusdarach — Morar

The beach from Local Hero. Silver sand, views to the Small Isles, and shallow water that warms up slightly more than the north coast.

💡 Park off the B8008. Walk through the dunes.

Calgary Bay — Isle of Mull

White sand backed by machair grassland. The name gave Calgary, Canada its name — not the other way around. Café at the car park.

💡 Look for the woodland sculpture trail.

Sanna Bay — Ardnamurchan

White sand and volcanic peaks. Often completely empty. Caribbean colours, Arctic temperatures.

💡 No facilities. Bring everything.

Oldshoremore — Sutherland

Less famous than Sandwood Bay but arguably as beautiful. Easier access — car park nearby. Pink sand and clear water. Two connecting beaches.

💡 Follow signs for Oldshoremore from Kinlochbervie.

Dornoch Beach — East Coast

Miles of golden sand on the east coast. Warmer and calmer than the west coast beaches. Good for families. The town has an excellent bakery.

💡 Free parking along the beach road.

Coral Beach (Claigan) — Isle of Skye

White "coral" (actually calcified seaweed). Turquoise water on a sunny day. 20-minute walk from the car park near Dunvegan Castle.

💡 Combine with Dunvegan Castle (5 min away).

Lossiemouth East Beach — Moray Coast

Sand dunes that go on for miles. Popular with surfers. The Moray Coast gets more sun than almost anywhere else in Scotland.

💡 Harbour Café for fish and chips afterwards.

Balnakeil Beach — Near Durness (NC500)

A vast crescent of sand near Cape Wrath. The nearby craft village has a good café and a chocolate shop. The beach connects to the Balnakeil Bay trail.

💡 Park at the craft village. Visit the Cocoa Mountain chocolate shop.

Editor's Note

I've swum at six of these beaches. The warmest was Dornoch in July — about 15°C, which is tropical by Scottish standards. The coldest was Sandwood Bay in October, which I don't recommend unless you enjoy the sensation of your body going into thermal shock. Bring a wetsuit. Or just paddle. Paddling is fine.
