Seafood + Gateway to Isles
Oban is the busiest ferry port on Scotland\'s west coast and the self-proclaimed "Seafood Capital of Scotland." Both claims are justified. The CalMac ferries leave for Mull, Coll, Tiree, Barra, and South Uist from the harbour. Fishing boats unload their catch 200 metres from the railway station. The air smells of salt and diesel and fried fish. It\'s a working town that happens to be in one of the most beautiful settings in Argyll.
What to Do in Oban
Oban Distillery
One of Scotland's oldest distilleries (1794), tucked into the town centre. The tour is small and personal — you can smell the sea in the warehouse. The 14-year-old is the one to try. Book ahead in summer.
💡 £12 for the standard tour. The distillery is a 2-minute walk from the ferry terminal.
McCaig's Tower
A Colosseum-like folly on the hill above Oban. Built by a local banker in 1897 to keep stonemasons employed during winter. The view over Oban Bay, Kerrera, and Mull is the best free thing in town. Go at sunset.
💡 Free. 10-minute walk uphill from the harbour. The structure is hollow — you walk around the inside.
Oban Seafood Hut (The Green Shack)
A green hut on the pier selling seafood landed that morning. Langoustines, oysters, mussels, crab sandwiches. No tables — you stand outside and eat from plastic containers. Some of the best seafood in Scotland for under £15.
💡 Cash only. Opens around 10am, closes when the seafood runs out. The langoustines are the move.
Ferry to Mull
The CalMac ferry from Oban to Craignure on Mull takes 50 minutes. Mull is one of the best islands in the Hebrides — Tobermory's colourful harbour, Calgary Bay, and boat trips to Staffa and Iona. You can do Mull as a day trip from Oban if you get the first ferry.
💡 Book the vehicle ferry weeks ahead in summer. Foot passenger tickets are always available.
