Tobermory's colourful waterfront on the Isle of Mull

Isle of Mull

Tobermory's painted harbour. Calgary Bay's white sand. Staffa's basalt columns. Iona's thousand-year-old abbey. Mull packs more into one island than seems fair.

Known For

Wildlife + Tobermory harbour

Mull is the most accessible of the Inner Hebrides — 50 minutes on the CalMac ferry from Oban. It\'s also one of the best islands in Scotland, full stop. The landscape shifts from the sea lochs of the south to the basalt cliffs of the north, with Ben More (966m) rising in the centre. Wildlife is everywhere: white-tailed eagles, otters, seals, and in summer, puffins on Staffa. Tobermory\'s waterfront is one of the most photographed streets in Scotland.

What to Do

Tobermory

One of the prettiest harbour towns in Scotland — a crescent of brightly painted buildings facing the Sound of Mull. The distillery produces Tobermory Gin and Tobermory single malt. The Mishnish is the pub you want — live music, good seafood, a fireplace.

💡 Park at the main car park above the town. The distillery tour is £12. The fish and chips van on the pier is excellent.

Calgary Bay

A sweep of white sand backed by machair (flower-rich coastal grassland). The name comes from the Gaelic Cala ghearraidh — "beach of the meadow." Not named after Calgary, Canada — it's the other way around. On a sunny day it's one of the best beaches in the Hebrides.

💡 Free parking. Café at the car park. The water is cold year-round. Look for the wooden sculpture trail in the woods.

Duart Castle

The 13th-century seat of Clan Maclean, perched on a cliff at the eastern tip of Mull. The battlements look over the Firth of Lorn to the mainland. Restored in 1911 after 200 years of ruin. The tearoom does a good scone. More atmospheric than the bigger-name castles.

💡 £10 entry. Open April-October. The approach drive along the cliff is dramatic.

Staffa & Fingal's Cave

Boat trips from Tobermory or Fionnphort take you to Staffa — a tiny island with hexagonal basalt columns identical to the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. Fingal's Cave is a sea cavern where the waves echo like a cathedral. Puffins nest here April-August and are remarkably tame.

💡 Book boat trips in advance. £35-40 per person. The puffins are best May-July. Wear waterproofs even on calm days.

Iona

A tiny island off the tip of Mull, reachable by a 10-minute ferry from Fionnphort. Iona Abbey is where St Columba landed from Ireland in 563 AD and founded a monastery that became the cradle of Scottish Christianity. Even if you're not religious, the island has an extraordinary quality of light and silence.

💡 The ferry runs frequently. No cars (unless you're a resident). Walk the island in about 4 hours.
